Made Clean

Psalm 51:1-2 - Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions.

Wash me throughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin.

You know the story behind Psalm 51. David had got involved in horrible sin, even to the point of having an innocent man murdered. He tried to cover his sin for nearly a year, but when approached by God’s Prophet, David’s heart broke with this prayer and confession. There is only one prayer a believer can pray when his sin is before him, “Wash me!”

But cleansing should not stop there. We read in Isaiah 1:16 -“Wash you, make you clean; put away the evil of your doings from before mine eyes; cease to do evil;” In other words it is up to us to put out of our lives the things that displease the Lord. We learn in

2 Corinthians 7:1 – “Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.”

If our hearts are truly repentant, we will put away sin from our lives

There is a third step we learn about in John 13:12-17, Jesus taught His disciples to wash one another’s feet; that is to show humility to one another and seek to help our fellow saints keep clean. In Acts 16:33 the newly saved jailer washed the apostles’ wounds! What blessings would come to our homes and churches if only God’s people would cleanse the wounds they have caused in the lives of others.

Wash me – wash yourself – wash one another. The one experience naturally leads to the other. It’s just a matter of getting started.
