Listen to Instructions

Acts 27:10 - And said unto them, Sirs, I perceive that this voyage will be with hurt and much damage, not only of the lading and ship, but also of our lives.

Acts 27:11 - Nevertheless the centurion believed the master and the owner of the ship, more than those things which were spoken by Paul.

The Apostle Paul warned the centurion in charge of the trouble that lay ahead but the centurion ignored him and gave orders to set sail. The trouble Paul spoke of showed itself in a terrible storm that resulted in the loss of the ship and the cargo but Paul and all aboard were saved by the grace of God.

The Roman centurion made many mistakes during that trip.

  1. He became impatient in verses 7, 9 and 12. He did not want to stay in the harbor because it was uncomfortable. He wanted to get on the move. Many suffer for no reason but because of their impatience.
  2. He listened to the master of the ship instead of the man of God! Verses 10, 11. No matter what the “experts” may say, depend on the truth of God’s Word.
  3. He took a vote in verse12. As usual, the majority was wrong. The majority, you may remember, kept Israel out of the promised land; and the majority voted to crucify Christ. Obey God’s Word even if the whole world is against you.
  4. He walked by sight not by faith. Verse 13. The “south wind” blew softly and was an indication for him to start moving. Beware of the “golden opportunity” that seems to contradict God’s instructions. South winds often become stormy winds.

The only sure way to pilot your boat is to obey the Word, come what may.
