Eternal Exercise

1 Timothy 4:8 – “For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come.”

Food and exercise go together, both in the spiritual life and the physical. Paul warned Timothy to be nourished in healthy doctrine and then to exercise himself unto godliness. Of course, the Apostle does not condemn bodily exercise; he is simply making a comparison: spiritual exercise is good for this life and for all eternity.

Paul practiced what he preached. “And herein do I exercise myself, to have always a conscience void of offence” (Acts 24:16). The believer who feeds on the Word but who never practices it will become overweight and sluggish spiritually. This explains why the believers addressed in Hebrews 5:12-14 were in such terrible spiritual condition: they had failed to have “their senses exercised to discern both good and evil” (verse 14).

What kind of Christians would we be if we put as much enthusiasm into spiritual things as we do in a golf game, a baseball game, or a bowling tournament? Professional athletes know the important part that proper diet and proper exercise play in their lives. Christians ought to be as disciplined in eternal things as the world is in temporal things!

Don’t neglect your spiritual exercises today! Be a doer of the Word.
