Watch Out What You Worship

Psalm 115:2-4 - Wherefore should the heathen say, Where is now their God?

But our God is in the heavens: he hath done whatsoever he hath pleased.

Their idols are silver and gold, the work of men's hands.

The psalmist in Psalm 115 is using a bit of “holy sarcasm” as he describes the dead idols of the heathen, with their blind eyes and deaf ears. But in verse 8 he makes a startling statement: “They that make them are like unto them; as is everyone that trusteth in them.

You become like the god that you worship.

Perhaps you have seen this in action in your own experience. You may know the businessman whose god is money. He worships money. What kind of person is this businessman? Soft, tender, gentle, sensitive to the needs of others? Probably not. Rather, he is likely to be hard, insensitive, perhaps even brutal – just like the metal he worships.

The more we become involved with Jesus Christ, the more like Him we will be; and people will see the change in our lives. A person cannot spend time in the presence of Christ and not experience transformation. This is why we pray and read the Bible; this is why we fellowship with Him all day long in the everyday affairs of life.

Beware what you worship! You are becoming like your god – or your God.
