Why Christians Cry

Psalm 56:8-9 – “Thou tellest my wanderings: put thou my tears into thy bottle: are they not in thy book?

When I cry unto thee, then shall mine enemies turn back: this I know; for God is for me.”

A famous TV comic often said, “I hate to see a grown man cry,” and he would usually get a laugh. But the man is dead wrong. Sometimes the strongest thing a Christian can do is cry. After all, “Jesus wept.” He was the Man of sorrows.

In Psalm 56, David has been crying, and David was certainly no weakling! At the time he was fleeing from King Saul and had found a false refuge in Gath (read 1 Samuel 21:10-15). It seemed as though all the promises of God had failed. Instead of sitting on a throne as King, David was hiding in the wilderness like a wild animal.

Sometimes Christians weep, not because of their own sins, but because of the sins of others. David saw the nation going down into ruin because of the wickedness of King Saul. He knew that innocent people would suffer, and he wept. He saw men twisting his words and telling lies about him. Would this hiding and running and wandering ever end?

Well. It did end, and David inherited the throne! But his tears helped to make him what he was. He was a man after God’s own heart (1 Samuel 13:14); for, after all, did not Jesus weep? Tears make us more like the Master, and that makes our tears worthwhile.
