Submit and Resist

James 4:7

"Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you."

What does it mean to submit yourself to God? Think about it like this, when you go to the Doctor, and he says this is what is going on. This is what you need to do to help with this problem. When you fill the prescription and take the medicine you are submitting to the will of the doctor.

If you have a financial question and go to an accountant to get help, listen to the counsel and put it into practice, you are submitting to that person’s advice.

When we read the Word of God and God tells us in: Proverbs 3:5 - Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.

Proverbs 3:6 - In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

Then submitting to Him would mean we trust Him, not depending on our own understanding and acknowledging Him as the final Authority in our life, that is submitting ourselves to God.

What does it mean to resist? We are told here in James 4:6 - But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.

We cannot resist the Devil in our own power, we must have the grace of God. The way we get that grace is to humble ourselves before God.

James 4:10 - Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.

James 4:7 - Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
