Confess and be Free

1 John 1:9 - If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

You will make mistakes. You will act outside of God’s will---and even against it---and immediately know in your heart you’ve failed. But understand that the Lord doesn’t reveal your sins in order to shame you or make you feel miserable---though those may be natural by-products of what you’ve done. Rather, He does it so you can be free.

If you’ve ever had a loved one who is an alcoholic or drug addict, you understand the concept. You would do anything to see your loved one liberated of the habit that is both controlling and destroying him or her. The same is true for Jesus: His desire is to free you of the devastating hold that sin has on your life. That’s why He’s always there welcoming you with open arms when you return to Him.

So when you fail, remember that God wants you back. Then, confess that He is right about what you’ve done and trust Him to teach you how to turn away from it forever.

Jesus, I know the sins You are pinpointing in my heart.

I agree with You and want freedom from them. Teach me how to walk in a way that honors You. Amen.
