Prodigal Son

Luke 15:1-32

You learn in this chapter about a Lost Sheep, Lost Coin, and Lost Son,

We read about Rejoicing over a sheep that was found,

Rejoicing over a coin that was found, and

Rejoicing over a son that was found

The sheep

The shepherd leaves ninety and nine to go find the lost sheep.

The coin

The woman lights a candle, sweeps the house, seeks diligently until she finds the coin.

The son

The Father watched and waited for the son.

Wait a minute, the sheep is searched for, the coin is looked for, but the son is waited on and watched for?

Why is that?  Certainly, a father loves his son more than a woman loves her coin and more than a shepherd loves his sheep.

The answer I believe is found in verse 16 and 17.

The father wanted his son to come to himself, to realize the condition he had put himself in.

When the son came to himself, he realized that his father had everything he needed.

The son also realized that he needed what his father had, and that he was willing to serve his father.

Do you know why we don’t have more people who are out in sin that come to themselves and get right with their Heavenly Father?

There is always someone who is willing to send money to the hog pen. There is always some program to rescue those in the hog pen. When this happens, the person never comes to himself, never gets right with God. Never renews fellowship with his family.

Be like Jesus, always ready to accept a wayward child back with love and forgiveness.
