My Eye Affects My Heart
The things we allow in our eye gates, the things we look at, can have a profound effect on our lives.
The prophet Jeremiah said in Lamentations 3:51 - Mine eye affecteth mine heart because of all the daughters of my city.
Think about all the Scriptures we have that illustrate this truth.
Genesis 3:6 - And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.
Eve saw the fruit; it looked good and was pleasant to her eyes. She and Adam ate and plunged all mankind into sin.
Lot’s wife turned to look back one last time to the city and she was turned to a pillar of salt.
Achan saw the gold and the idols we are told in Joshua chapter 7 and verse 21, he brought them into his tent and with them he brought a curse on God’s people.
Joshua 7:21 - When I saw among the spoils a goodly Babylonish garment, and two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold of fifty shekels weight, then I coveted them, and took them; and, behold, they are hid in the earth in the midst of my tent, and the silver under it.
King David saw Bathsheba and sinned. Job said I made a covenant with my eyes.
Why is this important to protect our hearts? We learn in Proverbs 23:7 - For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he:
Protect your heart, by being cautious about what you allow through your eyegate.
