The Tongue

Yesterday we spoke of speaking the right kind of words based on the Scripture; Colossians 4:6 - Let your speech be always with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man.

How do we do that when we read James 3:8 - But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.

One of the toughest battles anyone will ever face is the battle of controlling the tongue.

Someone expressed it this way:

If your lips would keep from slips,

Five things to observe with care:

To whom you speak, of whom you speak,

And how, and when, and where.

  1. Think before you speak, are the words helpful or hurtful?

Am I lifting up or tearing down?

                   Am I speaking in anger?

  1. Don’t say something about someone that you wouldn’t want said about you.

Galatians 6:1 - Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such a one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted.

  1. Make sure your heart is right with the Lord!

Luke 6:45 - A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.
