Biblical Love

I Corinthians 13:1-8

Most people don’t understand what Biblical love is. For most of us, our view of what true love is has been distorted by the books we read or by the TV shows we watch. Hollywood has changed the meaning of love from true love to lust!

The Apostle Paul then describes the nature of Biblical love, which is patient, kind, humble, and slow to anger.

  1. Biblical love is greater than speech. Words are easy to say, actions speak louder than words. You can say you love someone but if that love is not a Biblical love; then it is self -centered and all about you and not the object of your words. In the story of the Good Samaritan Jesus illustrates to us what Biblical love is all about. There was a priest who came by, a Levite came by, now they could have said, “I’ll pray for you,” “I love you,” “I feel sorry for you,” but none of those words led to a demonstration of the love the Samaritan showed towards the wounded man!

  1. Biblical love is greater than knowledge. “People don’t care how much you know, until they know how much you care.” (Dale Carnegie) Solomon, the wisest man who ever lived said, “Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep His commandments for this is the whole duty of man.” (Ecclesiastes 12:13)

  1. Biblical love is greater than generosity. It’s great to be generous but if it is not motivated by Biblical love it is nothing! Jesus told us the story of the widow’s mite and said many have cast in much from their abundance, but she has cast in more than all of them! Why? Because she had put in all she had! I think of the little lady at the personal care home who shook my hand and gave me a quarter and a dime!

  1. Biblical love is greater than self-sacrifice! Listen,  Paul is telling us whatever we do if it is not motivated by Biblical love it is nothing!

1Corinthians 13:13 - And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.
