Maturing as Believers
Hebrews 6:1 - Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God,
That word perfection means maturity, “let us go on unto maturity.” How do we as believers do that? Thankfully, God teaches us that throughout His Word.
The Scripture that we want to look at today is 2 Peter 1:5 - And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge;
The foundation must be in place to grow, to mature. The foundation for spiritual growth must be faith in Jesus Christ. That is why Jesus instructed Nicodemus in John chapter 3 saying, “Ye must be born again.” Folks who have never trusted Christ as their Savior are spiritually dead. So, they can’t grow spiritually until they are born from above. We are born again when we trust Christ as our Savior.
Ephesians 2:8 - For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
We learn in Hebrews 11:1 - Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
So how to we get this faith? Romans 10:17 - So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
In Scripture we see examples of “no faith.”
Mark 4:40 And he said unto them, Why are ye so fearful? how is it that ye have no faith?
In the Scriptures we see examples of “little faith.”
Matthew 16:8 Which when Jesus perceived, he said unto them, O ye of little faith, why reason ye among yourselves,
Matthew 8:26 And he saith unto them, Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith?
But, we also see examples of great faith.”
Matthew 8:10 When Jesus heard it, he marvelled, and said to them that followed, Verily I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel.
So, where are you today in your faith, no faith, little faith, or great faith?
Remember, Romans 10:17 - So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
If you want to grow as a Christian, the foundation must be right.
1 Corinthians 3:11 - For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Faith in Christ is the beginning of the Christian life.
