Worship and Service

Matthew 4:1-11

Matthew 4:10 - Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.

Never forget that Jesus faced Satan and defeated him as a man in a human body, depending on the power of the Spirit of God. In this way He shows us all how to face temptation and win the victory. Christ depended on God’s Word – “It is written!” Also, He had the Word ready in His heart, and thus able to silence the lies of Satan.

But it is a statement in verse 10 that interests us now: “Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and Him only shalt thou serve.” Satan had said nothing about service; all he wanted was worship. But Jesus knew that whatever a man worships, he serves. Let that saying sink down in your heart.

This is a surefire test for any person’s life. Just find out what it is that takes up your time, energy and money, and you will know what it is you really worship. What is the thing you sacrifice for? Then that is your god. Many a person who would never think of being late for work is never bothered by arriving late for church services. A headache would keep few home from work, but it might excuse some from being faithful at God’s house.

The thing you serve is the thing you worship. Are you truly worshiping God?
