Maturing as Believers -2

We began a study on what it means to grow spiritually as a believer. We looked at the foundation of the Christian life that must be faith in Jesus Christ.

Today, let’s look at what we’re instructed to do next  in II Peter 1 and verse 5.

2 Peter 1:5 - And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge;

So next we’re taught to add to our faith virtue. Virtue there is defined as excellence. J. Vernon McGee explains it like this; Down through the centuries, some English words have changed their meaning, and virtue is one of them. Virtus to the Roman of the first century meant a great deal more than chastity. It characterized the very finest of Roman manhood: strength, valor, courage, and excellence. My friend, these same qualities should also characterize your life and mine. How the world needs believers who have the courage to stand for what is right and to stand up and be counted for God in this day! Therefore Peter is saying, “Add to your faith courage.”

2 Peter 1:3 - According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:

God has called us to add to our faith virtue, courage, a willingness to stand for the truth of the Word of God. The Christian life was never meant just for the church pews on Sunday morning. It should be lived out in our homes, our workplace, our schools, our courtrooms, and in all our political offices.

To grow as a believer we must have faith in Jesus Christ and we must add to that faith the courage to stand.
