Get on the Scale
1 Samuel 2:3 - Talk no more so exceeding proudly; let not arrogancy come out of your mouth: for the LORD is a God of knowledge, and by Him actions are weighed.
What a startling statement Hannah made as she prayed! You and I can weigh only material things, but God can weigh the spiritual. He sees whether our lives are made up of “gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay or stubble” (I Corinthians 3:12). Certainly, He weighs the motives behind our actions. Jesus told the Pharisees that they lost their reward because they lived for the praise of men. He weighed their actions and revealed their hypocrisy.
God is able to weigh the inner man. “The soul of the diligent shall be made fat,” promises Proverbs 13:4b. This suggests that the inner man, the “hidden man of the heart” (I Peter 3:4), grows in response to our spiritual diet and exercise. “He that putteth his trust in the Lord shall be made fat,” says Proverbs 28:25. Faith adds spiritual muscles to the inner man and helps us grow in the Lord.
How sensitive people are when you talk about their weight – or lack of it! Are we just as sensitive when it comes to weighing the inner man? Is God going to say to us, “Thou art weighed in the balances, and art found wanting” (Daniel 5:27)?
