Maturing as Believers - 6
We are looking at what it means to grow spiritually as a believer. We looked at the foundation of the Christian life that must be faith in Jesus Christ. Then we must add virtue or courage as the word is defined, and then knowledge of God. Then we learned temperance or self-control and patience. Now what is next that we learn in II Peter chapter 1.
The next virtue after patience is godliness.
2 Peter 1:5 - And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge;
2 Peter 1:6 - And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness;
The Greek word for godliness means exactly what the KJV says, godliness. To be like God should be our goal. Some may say, and rightly so, we can never attain that goal. But, the Word says, 1 Peter 1:15 - But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation;
1 Peter 1:16 - Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.
Again, the Word says, 2 Peter 3:11 - Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness.
So, how do we do that? Go to the Word. Romans 12:2 - And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
God never tells us to do something that He doesn’t enable us to do. The old saying, “Where God guides, He provides,” is true. Trust Him in every area of your life!
