Enjoying God’s Bonuses
1 Kings 3:12-13 - Behold, I have done according to thy words: lo, I have given thee a wise and an understanding heart; so that there was none like thee before thee, neither after thee shall any arise like unto thee.
And I have also given thee that which thou hast not asked, both riches, and honour: so that there shall not be any among the kings like unto thee all thy days.
Most workers appreciate getting a bonus. It is a very practical way for an employer to say, “Thanks for a job well done!” It not only helps a person’s wallet, but also their ego. It’s an extra “boost” no matter how you look at it.
God enjoys giving spiritual bonuses. He gave some to young King Solomon. God offered the new king anything he desired, and Solomon asked for spiritual wisdom and an understanding heart. How this pleased the Lord! So, the Lord not only gave Solomon his requests, but He added riches, honor and victory as bonuses!
Why was God able to do this? Because if Solomon had the right values, and if he maintained the right kind of a heart, then God could trust him with these extra blessings. We learn in Proverbs 22:4 - By humility and the fear of the LORD are riches, and honour, and life.
Jesus expressed it like this: “Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you (Matthew 6:33). Has God given you any bonuses lately? Perhaps you need to take inventory of your heart to see if your values are all they ought to be.
