Hearing the Word

Psalm 139:23 - Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts:

When we read and study the Word of God, we must be aware of the fact that it is different from reading a novel or a history book. The Bible should be read with the thoughts of what the Lord is trying to teach you from the passages you are reading.

We should read with a purpose as King David says in Psalm 85:8 - I will hear what God the LORD will speak: for he will speak peace unto his people, and to his saints: but let them not turn again to folly.

When you read the Bible, ask the Holy Spirit to speak to your heart about what you need to hear. He knows everything about each of us and He will minister to each need as we read the Word.

If you take time in the morning to read a portion of Scripture, you will be amazed at how God, by the Holy Spirit, will communicate with you throughout the day. Many times, as I have read Scriptures before going to sleep, the Holy Spirit will wake me up in the middle of the night with deeper insight to what I have read. It’s good to keep a pen and notepad beside your bed to note those insights, because our enemy will try to get you to forget those teachings when you get up in the morning.

It is important that we apply what we learn as instructed in the following verse, James 1:22 - But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.
