The Word of God, Like as a Fire
Jude 1:3 - Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.
Earnestly – Seriously and sincerely
Contend – to struggle for, to labor fervently for
Let’s look at some Truths of the Word of God that we should be willing to “earnestly contend for.”
The Truth about the Scriptures, inspired, infallible, and inerrant!
The Truth about our Savior, virgin born, sinless life, cruel death, buried, and risen again.
The Truth about the Saints, 2 Corinthians -5:20 - Now then we are ambassadors for Christ,
The Truth about sinners, “wages of sin is death.”
Today let’s look at the Truth about Scriptures. How does the Bible define itself?
Jeremiah 23:29a - Is not my word like as a fire? Saith the LORD; The word of God is like fire. The law was a fiery law, “Deuteronomy 33:2 - And he said, The LORD came from Sinai, and rose up from Seir unto them; he shined forth from mount Pagan, and he came with ten thousands of saints: from his right hand went a fiery law for them, and of the gospel Christ says, “I have come to send fire on the earth,” Luke - 12:49.
Fire has different effects, according as the matter is on which it works; it hardens clay, but softens wax; it consumes the dross, but purifies the gold. So the word of God is to some a savour of life unto life, to others of death unto death (II Corinthians. 2:16). God appeals here to the consciences of those to whom the word was sent: “Is not my word like fire? Has it not been so to you?
Job went through the fire and said in:
Job 23:10 - But he knoweth the way that I take: when he hath tried me, I shall come forth as gold.
1 Corinthians 3:13- Every man’s work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man’s work of what sort it is.
