Obey the Spirit
1 Thessalonians 5:19 - Quench not the Spirit.
There is a song that the Inspirations Quartet sings entitled, “Obey the Spirit of the Lord.” This song highlights the importance of listening and obeying the Holy Spirit as He speaks to our hearts.
When a person trusts Christ as their Savior, the Holy Spirit comes to indwell that person. God uses the Apostle Paul to ask this question in 1 Corinthians 6:19 - What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost, which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?
And again, in 2 Corinthians 5:17 - Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. The new is the Holy Spirit living within every believer.
We are instructed not to quench the Spirit. To quench means “to extinguish,” like putting out a fire. It means “to dismiss.” One of the ways we do this is to ignore the promptings of the Holy Spirit. Another way is to reason within ourselves that we will obey later. Either of these is quenching the Holy Spirit. We must obey Him to experience the fullness of joy that He wants for every believer.
