Choose You This Day
"And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD." Joshua 24:15
Joshua makes a very interesting point here as he speaks to the children of Israel. They have traveled through the wilderness, provided manna every day, they were provided water, and provided protection as they traveled. But now, Joshua is telling them to choose this day that they will serve the Lord.
So what was the point Joshua was trying to make? The children of Israel had chosen over and over to follow God. Joshua knew that if they were to continue to follow God they must choose each day to follow Him.
The same is true if you are going to be successful in serving God, then you will have to decide to serve God every day of your life. The decision to serve God is not a one-time decision; the decision to serve God is an everyday decision. Your past decisions to serve God are not good for today because you must choose to serve God today.
Your past decisions don't make you do right today. For instance, just because you made a decision in the past to daily read God’s Word did not make you read this morning. If you read the Scriptures this morning it is because you chose to read them today. Your past decision to be faithful to church does not make you faithful to church; you must choose every Sunday and Wednesday to be faithful to church. The choice to serve God is a decision that must be made on a daily basis.
