Consequences of Choices

Acts 27:9-21, 43-44

There have been times in most folks’ lives when they have experienced some type of shipwreck. It could have been a shipwreck of a relationship, or of finances, maybe an emotional shipwreck. In chapter 27 of the book of Acts we read about a shipwreck that was a result of poor choices. Let’s look at those:

  1. Impatience - Act 27:6 - And there the centurion found a ship of Alexandria sailing into Italy; and he put us therein.

The centurion found another ship to sail to Italy.

  1. Failure to listen - Act 27:10  And said unto them, Sirs, I perceive that this voyage will be with hurt and much damage, not only of the lading and ship, but also of our lives.

Act 27:11 - Nevertheless the centurion believed the master and the owner of the ship, more than those things which were spoken by Paul.

The Centurion did not believe the warnings from Paul.

  1. Self-centeredness - Act 27:12 (a) And because the haven was not commodious to winter in,

Because the place they were in wasn't comfortable enough the decision was made to move on. We are told in

1 Timothy 6:6 - But godliness with contentment is great gain.

  1. The crowd is usually wrong – Acts 27:12 (b) ..the more part advised to depart thence also, if by any means they might attain to Phenice, and there to winter; which is an haven of Crete, and lieth toward the south west and north west.

Have the courage to stand alone when necessary.

  1. Make decisions based on which way the wind blows instead of principles. Act 27:13 - And when the south wind blew softly, supposing that they had obtained their purpose, loosing thence, they sailed close by Crete.

Before we can determine what the good, acceptable and perfect will of God is we must present ourselves as a living sacrifice to God. Romans 12:1-2
