Giants in Our Lives

Almost everyone knows the story of David killing the giant Goliath. While the whole army was afraid to face Goliath, David loudly proclaimed in, 1 Samuel 17:37 - David said moreover, The LORD that delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine. And Saul said “unto David, Go, and the LORD be with thee.”

Those that know the story also know that God did deliver David by directing the stone from his slingshot directly to the point in Goliath’s armor that was most sensitive, and Goliath was killed.

But did you know there was another giant David had to face that he was unable to kill. This giant's name was Ishbibenob, (II Samuel 21:16). The Bible says David grew faint as he fought this giant and his nephew, Abishai rescued him by killing the giant with his sword.

We can learn from this that God doesn’t always work the same way. He allowed David to defeat Goliath with his slingshot, but here He used Abishai’s sword to defeat the giant.

We also learn that the giants we face in our lives have a way of coming back. We never get to the place where we can say, “I have arrived, no more giants to face!” We never know when another giant is going to pop up in our lives. We are warned in 1 Corinthians 10:12 - Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.

Another lesson is that we cannot always defeat the giants we face alone. Just as David needed Abishai’s help, there are times when we need the help and support of our brothers and sisters in Christ. We may all be surprised when we get to heaven and learn of all the ones God used to help us along the way.
