Let Your Light Shine
Matthew 5:14-16 - Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.
Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.
Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
Jesus uses here the illustration of a candle regarding letting our lights shine. Let’s look at some things we know about the light of a candle.
- A candle can’t burn until it is lit. This teaches us that salvation is of the Lord as we read in Jonah 2:9 - Salvation is of the LORD. This shows us that we can’t purchase salvation nor can we earn it, it is a gift of God. We read in Psalm 18:28 - For thou wilt light my candle: the LORD my God will enlighten my darkness.
- A candle is used to show the way. Jesus cautions us to not hide our light under a bushel, but to let it shine.
- A candle is used so that others may see the light. We read in Psalm 36:9 - For with thee is the fountain of life: in thy light shall we see light. Ephesians 5:8 - For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light:
Are you letting your light shine to a lost and dying world? There is a great gospel hymn that goes like this, “This little light of mine I’m gonna let it shine.”
